How To Make Coffee Without Electricity?

Updated: Feb 4, 2022

Waking up from a night of dreaming about the weekend, looking around to find the usual smell of strong coffee beans has left the building. Rolling over, slipping out of bed, you notice right away that your alarm clock did not go off this morning. Shoot, I am going to be late for work, ‘thinking to yourself, as you realize it is your day off.

You pull yourself up, place your house shoes on while trying to hover towards the kitchen for your wake-up call in the coffee pot. You catch yourself looking around, seeing the night light on in the hallway is out, while pondering if you forgot to turn the pot on for today.

Nothing was moving, no warm smell in the air, not a single peep from the still wonders that usually go on in the small black Pot in your kitchen.

No electricity, everything in your home is dark, as you pick up your phone from the counter, reaching those digits to call the electric company to complain. After getting off the phone, they told you there was a bad storm last night, and they hope to have the lights on in a couple of days.

Not panicking, you realize this would come up at some point in your life, and you were prepared for this disaster. You reach the doorknob to the basement, striding down the steps ‘as if you were king of the castle, ‘well you are in your own castle. You will be the only one in the neighborhood that has hot coffee soon.

Reaching over at the boxes of emergency supplies, you reach in to grab exactly what you need to have that morning cup of coffee without any help from the electric company.

This post will explain what you will need to never go without coffee again when the lights go dark. Think about how proud you will be when the coffee pot is alive again. Invite your neighbors over for a great conversation starter as to why you have hot coffee, and they are trembling from the thoughts of not having any.

The complete list for making coffee without electricity

Power Inverter – (2000) watts. My Keurig is between 1460 and 1500 watts. You could buy a larger power inverter, but mine works well for this application to drink coffee without power.

Extra Car or Truck Battery. (You could use the one on your vehicle if you have a power inverter already installed. If you own a newer vehicle and do not have one installed it is ok also).

Cables for power inverter – You will need at least (4 AWG) gauge wire. I will list all the costs to this at the bottom of this blog.

(Optional) Generator – You could buy a small one to just use for charging the battery, or you could buy a battery charger for way less that does the same job as the Generator.

(Optional) Solar Panels – I do not use Solar Panels, but if you are smart enough, and have the money you could just buy a few panels to use when the lights go out. I am just naming something simple I use for myself with the inverter set-up.

I would buy the cables with claw clamps on them. This makes it so much easier to use when hooking up to your battery. I have a (2000 watt) Power Inverter in my truck, and I leave the clamps hooked to my battery. It has an ‘on-off’ switch, so it works well for me.

Instructions to hook your power up for making Coffee.

Take out the Power Inverter from where you have it stored. Hook up the positive (red) wire to the positive terminal of the inverter. Do the same to the negative (black) wire. Take out your car or truck battery and hook up the clamps from the cable connected to the Power Inverter. Check and make sure your Inverter is working properly and everything is connected well.

If you have a garage or shop, you can use the battery and Inverter in there. This would help the safety of this application. If you do not have any of those places, just go outside on your porch or back deck to make your coffee.

If everything is ok with the connections, you can plug in your coffee pot. Turn the coffee pot on to make sure it is working properly. Then just make your coffee. It really is that simple to make your favorite coffee without electricity. You could just drive to the store and pick a ‘hot’ cup of coffee up, but who does not want to make their own coffee. There is something about pouring your own coffee from your coffee pot. Store b coffee is different from making your own.

My List of Items Needed That I have For Making Coffee Without Electricity

Amp Peak (2000 watt) Power Inverter

4 Gauge (25 ft red and black) rolls of wire

Heavy Duty 2 PCS Battery Jumper Cable Clamps

NOCO GENIUS1, 1-Amp Fully Automatic Smart Charger, 6V and 12V Battery Charger.

You can buy your own versions of this set-up; this is just what I use to power my coffee maker when the lights go out. You can use the Power Inverter set-up for other uses. I would use gloves when dealing with electrical applications. You will also need the Car or Truck battery at your local Automotive store. You can also find a used one online for sale at your local Facebook Marketplaces.

I use this when I go fishing or when I am camping with friends. Since my Power Inverter is already installed in my truck. I never have a dead phone battery and can always have a cup of ‘hot’ coffee on standby in any situation.

Let me know what you think about this method of drinking coffee without having electricity. Will you have a hot cup of coffee if your power goes out? How would you set your own power source without electricity?
